In April of 2010 the William D. Ruckelshaus Center (Center) engaged the WSU Division of Governmental Studies and Services (DGSS) to assist with evaluation efforts focused on Legislatively-mandated Hospital Nurse Staffing Committees. Those committees were to have been implemented at each of eighty-nine hospitals in Washington, and the Nurse Staffing Steering Committee was desirous of assessing the extent to which those committees had impacted nurse staffing in those institutions. DGSS was requested to conduct a survey research project involving approximately 1054 members of nurse staffing committees located at each of those Washington hospitals.
