Division of Governmental Studies and Services

Teaching and Student Interaction

Courses

Faculty associated with DGSS teach both undergraduate and graduate classes during the academic year. Most of these classes are taught through the Department of Political Science and Criminal Justice. Each year DGSS faculty offer a cross-listed graduate course entitled "Evaluation Research" [Political Science 541/Criminal Justice 540] wherein graduate students are integrated into DGSS applied social science projects to secure hands-on experience with this type of research.

Classroom Interaction

Student mentoring

Students working in DGSS have the opportunity to work closely with staff who will provide advice, feedback and guidance during their time with the Division. Many of these students have gone on to public service careers or academic placements and maintain continuing professional ties with DGSS.

Committee service

Faculty at DGSS serve regularly on the committees of Ph.D. and M.A. candidates in Criminal Justice and Political Science. When serving on these committees DGSS faculty display an active interest in the success of the candidate by providing regular and constructive feedback, support in carrying out field research, and assistance with statistical analyses.
